What is the difference between quality lines?
All of our flatware lines are made from the same high quality 18/10 stainless steel, but as you go up quality lines the gauge (thickness) of the steel increases. The dinner knives in the Lux, Heritage, and Sherrill Home lines (except for Classic Rim and Old harbor) are hollow handle, as opposed to the solid knives in the SMI line. Hollow handle knives are weighted for better balance, and allow for clearer pattern definition. Additionally, the patterns become more sophisticated and elegant as you go up quality lines. Finally, the higher end lines have a five star quality finish, the best in industry.

What is the difference between the solid and the hollow handle knife?
The solid knife is forged from a single rod of 410 stainless steel and is heavier than the hollow handle knives. The hollow handle knives are made from a forged blade of 410 stainless steel, joined with a hollow handle made of 18-10 stainless steel. The handle is filled with cement, to attach the blade and weight the knife. This makes the hollow handle knife nicely balanced. Because the handle is stamped from 18-10 stainless steel, the pattern definition is much clearer and can be more intricate than a forged knife.
